The Gathering Storm (2002) (TV movie)

English As usual with HBO, an accurate biographical, television and political drama, representing one not entirely happy period of Winston Churchill’s life, which gives a chance to excel to the English beau Albert Finney, who utterly enjoys his role. Especially in the bathtub. Of course, expect a great acting performance, but also a classic description of the life of a statesman. There are countless similar dramas and they are all comparable in quality. Adequate for a TV movie, but somehow there wasn’t anything in it that would provide me with some deeper knowledge.

Flic Story (1975)

English An exemplary French filmmaking, which is also dominated by the good old Czech dubbing. Without it I don’t think it would be worth the five stars, but the dubbing makes Alain Delon and Jean-Louis Trintignant seem so perfect that the film gives you goosebumps throughout the whole story, which is essential for a proper French crime drama.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Berg der Begierden (1998) (episode)

English In this episode the side storyline of Resi and her newly acquired restaurant on the top of a mountain completely overshadowed the investigation, which immediately becomes totally uninteresting and pointless. Resi behaves like a proper slave master here and with that she immediately won me over. She is looking for her future employees in front of the employment office, and not in it, everyone is paid illegally, she employs children and is scarce with food…

Wind River (2017)

English If you like movies and watch a large number of them every month, including the new ones, then you will appreciate a movie that is written so perfectly from start to finish that it's a pleasure to watch. That's probably why I would simply describe why I gave the film five stars. I had a feeling that from the beginning till the end I was watching a crime film with everything it entails. There were no complicated explanations, but an amazingly chilly atmosphere and wonderful locations. Everything fits together perfectly, and you enjoy not only the suffering of Elizabeth Olsen, but also Jeremy Renner, who became the lone fighter for justice the moment he put on the white overalls and ventured alone into the wild. I was excited. I didn’t miss a single minute of this movie. And the best part is that you can really feel that Taylor Sheridan is behind all of that. You can sense the chilling atmosphere of Sicario, but also the dangerous shoot offs of the film Hell or High Water. And yet you know that this film is in its way completely unique. Hopefully, Sheridan will maintain that diligence. When it comes to filmmaking craft, Wind River is one of the best films I saw in 2017.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Bei Zuschlag Mord (1997) (episode)

English This episode features a nice location of the chateau, which was the setting for a mysterious murder of a man who creates and trades in counterfeit icons. This episode was a bit mysterious, but the result is still relatively average, both in terms of humor and the investigation itself. The only plus of the whole episode is the etude of Benno’s mother – Resi – who sold her clock to the murdered man for a bargain price, only to find out that they are several times more valuable. Wondering how she found out? The clock appears at a local auction. But that would not be Resi if she did not show up at the auction and cause a bit of a drama there… And it doesn’t matter at all that the buyer is already dead at the time.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Tod auf Tournee (1997) (episode)

English In this episode you will find out that Benno also has a sister. It may be a step-sister, but still. And she immediately gets involved in a fuck up – a murder of an actress. And not just any murder, but an extremely dramatic one – one that happens directly during a theatrical performance. However, the investigation is carried out in the usual spirit of the town and the only thing that really interested me was the fact that Benno takes no prisoners and blames everyone around him. It doesn’t matter if the person was really the murderer or not. Well, to each their own.

Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates (2016)

English When there is a duo in a film, I usually have no problem accepting the fact that both of them share the screen time somehow evenly. But this is perhaps the first film where I have encountered that where one character brutally overshadows the other. I had a feeling that Adam DeVine was there all the time and Zac Efron almost never. Not that it matters to the overall story, but it seemed rather strange. Especially when the story doesn’t revolve around just one character, but intentionally around brothers. As for the comedy, I was completely satisfied. A proper American comedy movie worth three stars, where I was most pleased with Anna Kendrick, who plays her own thing and again does it so divinely that you just can’t dislike her.

Nos voisins les Jones (2016)

English When it comes to acting, it was actually pretty good. Despite the fact that the premise of this comedy is nothing original. But Zach Galifianakis plays the good guy as usual in this movie and also brews is own beer in the cellar. I always have an understanding for that, so I immediately grew to like his character. His wife, Isla Fisher, looks really good for a 40-year-old lady, not only in appearance but also in acting. And as for the Joneses, Gal Gadot and Jon Hamma? They play what they need to and create enough tension for the whole film. I was satisfied. I had a nice rest and that is exactly what I needed in that moment from a comedy like this.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Waidmannszank (1997) (episode)

English The hunters and the poachers got so crazy that I was rooting for Benno for an hour and a half to crack this difficult case. Don’t expect too much fun in this episode. This is probably the most serious episode I’ve ever seen. And the ending? It’s just awesome. For me personally, it was a very nice surprise in the form of a very decent crime story.

Burning Love (2015)

English The Italians apparently tried to create their own traditional character in this movie. Otherwise, I can’t understand why they tried to shoot this wannabe comedy, which is actually a documentary about a character who first became anti anti-Semite, just to see the light and understand that they don’t actually defend the Jews, but that they’re afraid of them. So the anti anti-Semite become anti-Semite and the story continues… The premise might not be so bad, but the creators apparently consciously stepped so far beyond the line that after a while, the funny moments ceased to be funny. However, this film was apparently successful in Italy, so I feel that the present Italy has much lower threshold of what is funny than me.
