Stockholm Stories (2013)

English I already knew a few of the actors and so I’ve had no issue getting used to them. Because within a few moments, there’s a crazy rollercoaster of scenes and situations the characters have to ride through to become whole in the end. And so what if it wasn’t exactly fun at times? Who can claim that the Scandinavians are boring and uninteresting people since their wallets can be three times fuller than ours? It’s only a matter of time for some sort of absurdity or a loss of appetite towards life to get thrown into the mix. And when you add it up to the cold and distant, but often honest Scandinavian nature, it simply can’t turn out bad.

The Excursionist (2013)

English So we’ve finally lived to see an A-grade movie from Lithuania. It brings a story that isn’t overly aggressive or cruel but brings out the terrors of a post-war era with moments and shots that speak for themselves. The tale of little Marija took my breath away. She’s lived through terrors of the war in her own way and with very little understanding. On the other hand, she was lucky to meet good people, so even though she’s gone through hell, it could have been even worse. Exactly as the reviewer danliofer says, this movie is a lot of things, but definitely not black and white. It opens up a lot of questions and they all have something in common – humanity. The final scene has pierced my heart like a Nazi’s dagger.

Stranger Things - Season 2 (2017) (season)

English The second series of Stranger Things has managed to do the same thing as the first one; it came up with a mysterious story that smoothly connects to the first one, all while creating its own confident environment which was fun from the beginning till the very end. The 1980s atmosphere is apparent from the hairdos alone and there are nice moments where the creators paid homage to some film legends from Terminator to Indiana Jones. By the end, I wished that the main gang with Eleven in the lead never got old and stayed this awesome forever. Let’s hope that the third series comes as soon as possible.

The Day of the Triffids (2009) (TV movie)

English After reading the book, I had an inkling to watch a movie adaptation of that incredibly dystopian world that reeks of depression, fear and death. But I made the mistake of choosing the first one that I came across. This two-piece load of crap is bad at everything that should have made it great. And as far as the book goes, they just stole the basic outline. When the plane crashed with passengers on board, one of which could see, I immediately knew that this is going to be nothing like the book. The actors were also incredibly punchable. Don’t even get me started on the production, which was B-class, even C-class, just like everything else. The only upside of this two-part movie was the fact that the English haven’t screwed up the Triffids with awful CGI. I must admit that judging from the overall quality, I almost expected them to be cacti wrapped in tin foil. That didn’t happen and somehow, I even managed to sit through this nightmare.

Fortitude (2015) (series)

English Season one: the unusual environment of Svalbard isn’t the only thing that’s made this show a one-of-a-kind story experience. If you’re expecting an untypical crime investigation show, also be ready for a horror and a tale that seems obvious at first but ends up being intricate and original. This time, it truly wasn’t the gardener who’s done it. Even if it was the only gardener in Svalbard, which might be entirely possible given the population. The little town of Fortitude was loads of fun with its atypical reality. It was a pleasant way to cool down during warm summer nights and it’s offered an interesting story which probably won’t end with the first series. Which is definitely a good thing. Oh, and Richard Dormer is absolutely brilliant and uncompromising.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Mord im Chor (2000) (episode)

English Over a whole range of episodes, I’ve found out that they have more amenities in Bad Tölz than in any metropolis. This time I found out that they even have a choir made out of ordinary people and Resi Berghammer – Benno’s mom. As always, she gets tangled up in a murder and the investigation may begin. It’s a typical well-made episode with a nice climax towards the end. After this many episodes, I’m honestly surprised that they keep coming up with new stuff. Sure, there’s the state council guy again with his typical political nonsense or the local group of Italians that they keep pushing in. But the choir? That’s the first time I’m hearing about it.

Thor: Ragnarok (2017)

English The funniest and probably also the best Marvel movie I’ve ever seen. Plus there’s even some 1980s music that fits the story perfectly. It was literally as if Daft Punk started yet another movie music orgy after Tron. Anyways, I realize that choosing a very alternative New Zealand director Taika Waititi must have been a big risk. Especially since most of the dialogues were improvised. You could expect anything at all, but once you know what kind of brilliant movies he’s already filmed, you can just hope that Thor: Ragnarok will be a success and so will Taika. Of course, it’s also important whether you like Thor as a character. I’d say it’s currently the best, the most original, the most inventive, the funniest Marvel cinematic universe character. However, the movie has taken this originality and wittiness to a whole new level. I haven’t laughed this hard watching a movie for a long time. The improvisation has brought some amazing scenes to life and I’d be surprised if people didn’t talk about them and even make parodies of them. Furthermore, the story itself is great, Jeff Goldblum is brilliant as a leader of a planet riddled with trash. And Mark Ruffalo as Hulk is probably the most prominent he’s ever been. Everybody has their say; Anthony Hopkins, Karl Urban, Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, even Benedict Cumberbatch who has proved that he’s funny with a single scene. Unlike his own – often far too serious – movie Doctor Strange. And don’t even get me started on all the cameos in Ragnarok, one of them played by the director himself, as has become a tradition. Overall, I thought it was more than amazing. I don’t think I’ll see anything better or more fun this year. Or ever.

Apocalypse on Wheels (2008)

English I feel like after the morning shift’s over at the local car factory, the afternoon shift’s coming in and people from the offices also take off, the traffic can sometimes be worse than in Bucharest. And that’s saying something considering Bucharest’s a real piece of work. But to film a documentary about it?

The Hatton Garden Job (2017)

English These grandpas may be relatively unknown actors but getting used to their hogwash really took a lot of work, just like the rest of the movie. It doesn’t put you to sleep and you don’t exactly end up thinking it’s been a waste of time, so it’s not bad in that respect. I thought it was okay for an unknown movie.

Der Bulle von Tölz - Liebespaarmörder (2002) (episode)

English How on Earth does Benno do it that whenever his old lady sets him up with some charismatic woman, she ends up being mixed up in a murder he’s investigating? No wonder Benno’s single all the time and the only thing he cares about is getting his belly full. In this episode, he’s so rude to his mom that she refuses to cook for him, but then he pays for her at the restaurant, which is probably the first time he’s done anything for her. The episode was pretty standard. This is the first time we’re seeing a killer of lovers, so that’s fun.
