Puss in Boots (2011)

English I like cats, so I just can’t rate this worse than this. Not to mention the fact that this animated movie is really quite well-done. The ideas, the temperament of Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek and even the story itself? You won’t get to see those things just in every other animated movie released nowadays.

Arn: The Knight Templar (2007)

English The most expensive Swedish film ever made. That’s quite appealing, isn’t it? That’s also why I was quite looking forward to watching this film and happy that it finally happened. I liked the medieval atmosphere. The story had its charm and both the war atmosphere and the relationship tangles blended beautifully. It all fit together nicely, and even though some events might have been changed to fit the film better, I’m glad that I could be, at least in film, part of Swedish history and learn a little more about it. At least I learned who Arn was.

Corridor: Keep Out! (2012)

English Personally, I must say that I was quite satisfied. I wish Cinemax offered more such films. Friday night, you don’t know what to watch and they offer this piece of perfect filmmaking. The idea is actually very interesting, but very hard to believe. That’s also why I’m not giving this five stars. But it still kept me in suspense more than a lot of horror movies, and that’s why it definitely deserves attention. With this review, I would also like to thank those who translate these films for us. Cinemax is a great channel that offers great movies. But it occurs to me that those self-proclaimed film lovers who are here on the database are not even interested in really interesting films. They’d rather play some American crap than give a chance to pieces that have almost no rating here. This website might seem full of movie buffs, but a few days after the premiere there are only five ratings. The film definitely deserves more attention and hopefully it will get it too.

The Godfather (1972)

English The Godfather is the ultimate gangster movie; there’s hardly anything more to add. Marlon Brando is spectacular and not even Al Pacino can surpass him. This is mainly because Marlon Brando’s performance is perhaps one of the greatest acting performances I have ever experienced in a film. Excellent from start to finish. Although the film has 175 minutes, what is it compared to one decade of in the lives of a mobster family, which is everything but boring.

New Best Friend (2002)

English Cinemax lured me to a lesbian party, and then I just couldn’t wrap my head around how awful this movie really was. “Indifference”, which is this movie’s Czech title, is a quality that I essentially hate, but on the other hand it is an exact quality of the feeling I am currently experiencing towards this film.

The Smurfs (2011)

English I don’t want to talk shit about the Smurfs. As a kid, I rather liked them. For this reason, I was quite curious about the movie adaptation. And I must say that it didn’t bother me. In my opinion, it will make children very happy, and the adults will be able to chill with it. What more could you want? By the way, did you also think about how damn hard it must be for Smurfette in that gang? Well, the most important thing is that she knows how to cook macaroni and when the water should be properly salted...

Live Flesh (1997)

English Pedro Almodóvar is not one of my favorite directors. But when I stumbled into this movie for an umpteenth time on Cinemax and saw Penélope Cruz giving birth in the bus, I decided to finish watching this. And I must say that it’s not that bad. A strange mix of love, relationships and the sometimes fateful problems related to that. Definitely a standard from Almodóvar, but for me a film that I have to watch on a special opportunity, otherwise I’d get bored pretty quickly.

The Three Musketeers (2011)

English These Three Musketeers are something completely different than you would expect. And that’s actually a good thing. After all, what good would it do me to watch the same story over and over again, just with different actors? This story is always taken very seriously not only from a historical point of view and at times gets quite romantic. Anderson took the originally story, fucked around with it, gave it a thrashing, abused it and this is the result – a completely zany ride which makes no sense whatsoever but entertains. And that’s the most important thing. You must take it as entertainment, not as a historical tale. Then it works, and rather well at that. The actors also understood this and I must say that I had quite a good time with them. I laughed and got to see the musketeers as a bonus.

Gran Paradiso - Aufbruch ins Leben (2000)

English I can’t say that this film is bad, or at least as bad as the ratings here make it look. It didn’t feel like that to me at all. I rather think that the feeling still prevails on this website that the Germans cannot make good films, which is not true at all. The problem is that it’s harder for the really good ones to get to us than for the commercially successful ones. Gran Paradiso is a classic story about overcoming the insurmountable and I really liked it. It really resonated with me. For example, I really liked how the main character in the wheelchair changed his views over time, beginning to realize that even though he is in a wheelchair, life is still something we should respect and take care of. And the ending was just delicious. It wasn’t exactly a hit movie, but on the other hand I knew it was sincere.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986)

English I thought Clint Eastwood would come up with a military blockbuster that will make me laugh as it happened perhaps only with the M.A.S.H. 4077. But it’s still not a bad movie. Heartbreak Ridge has a classic idea, a classic rendition, just as classic course and an even more classic conclusion. In fact, it’s all absolutely average. This is improved by Clint Eastwood himself, who as a sergeant employed certain slightly harsh methods, and his platoon ignored him. This creates a lot of good but also bad situations and the biggest problem lies with the platoon. I couldn’t stand those guys. The actors portrayed them as a band of usual douchebags in a way that I had to root for Clint, who at least kept showing some effort throughout the film.
