Lights Out (2016)

English As a small-scale film, this movie is quite fine. What’s also fine however is how the director took the original idea, which had been made into a short film, and managed to turn it into a feature film. It’s nothing complicated, but it works. It’s not silly at all. People behave the way real people do rather than behaving like rubber figurines on paper. So, all in all? A pleasant horror movie surprise – it won’t offend you and while it won’t make you excited either, it gets the mission fulfilled with a full number of survivors.

Jurassic World (2015)

English I like how the entire Jurassic World is referring to the good old Jurassic Park. It’s not hiding the reference and it’s not attempting to be just another embarrassing remake. On the contrary, it expands the entire dinosaur world and that’s actually quite a good thing. And even though the main plotline is about an over-grown and mutated dinosaur, which actually isn’t too great a premise to build a movie on, it still watches pretty well. The authors did a great job in terms of casting. Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are exactly the reason why I really enjoyed the movie. Chris Pratt plays his standard cool dude who looks like he just crawled out of the jungle and who can communicate with every mammal on the planet, and Bryce Dallas Howard is so beautiful here that I will keep dreaming about her fringe for several months to come.

The Legend of Tarzan (2016)

English At first I was surprised with the story itself. The thing is that the film does not offer the classical view of Tarzan’s life in the jungle, but it starts at a moment when Tarzan is already a cultivated and respectable English subject with an aristocratic past and the manners or a true elderly gentleman. The beginning seems really good and it is really entertaining. But after about half an hour, Tarzan sets off on a journey to his original homeland. There is a plot twist and the story goes back to its beginning. So once again Tarzan is flying around on endless lianas – a liana in one hand, the beautiful Jane in the other – and he’s fighting against British colonists. At that point, the excitement starts to wane and unfortunately it doesn’t get better again. It’s fine, but this movie doesn’t deserve more than three stars to be swung towards it on a liana.

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

English That back in the day I liked La La Land was probably amplified by the fact that, as a musical, the score was beautiful and on top of that, the movie offered a bit of fatefulness, which is something I don’t find much with musicals these days. Because I am not normally a fan of musicals… actually not at all. Well and this version of the Beauty and the Beast is exactly the kind of the bitter-sweet American musical, which is definitely good in all respects, but which gives you nothing more than that. At most, there is the visual aspect in the form of talking furniture, which is nice, but which definitely does not save the movie at all. It is incredibly average…

Get Out (2017)

English The completely reversed view of racism caused that Get Out is one of the most interesting thrillers that I have seen recently. Racist hatred created a very strong story here – and it’s best that you know as little as possible about it before watching. That way, you will be really surprised and at the same time you will feel suspense with every passing minute, which will make your experience of the movie even stronger. On top of that, I have to add that Daniel Kaluuya made a very interesting impression on me. We’ll see what other movies he comes up with in the future.

Quelques minutes après minuit (2016)

English I have never come across a movie that tells a pretty sad and emotional dramatic story and that makes story-telling easier for itself using fantasy motifs in the form of the monster itself that speaks with the charismatic voice of Liam Neeson. We could actually say that this isn’t fantasy at all. The entire story is based on a sad human story from the gloomy English countryside. Nevertheless, it is the atmosphere of the English countryside and the monster itself that make the movie into a really good event which at the end must get to pretty much every viewer.

Crown for Christmas (2015) (TV movie)

English This was so stupid that I had to watch it to the end. That’s a contradiction, you say? It sure is. The thing is all the characters in this one behaved in such a weird manner that it was impossible to understand that I was interested in seeing where it would all lead in the end. Well and since it had quite a superficially attractive plot, in terms of quality I would compare it to Hannah Montana. All the characters behave as if they had just taken some magic mushrooms, but the bullshit they spew will sort of hypnotize you that you will get the urge to crank up the heating, crawl under a blanket, make cozy in your soul and watch this silly thing all the way to the end without the blink of an eye.

Belle and Sebastian (2013)

English There’s actually nothing wrong with this story at all. It takes place – silly as it may sound – in the times of World War 2 that are very attractive for filmmakers. It tells the story of an orphan who makes friends with a stray dog and this entire interesting story revolves around the beautiful countryside of the French Alps. On top of that, the director is very generous and along with the director of cinematography they have created beautiful film shots that are literally a pleasure to watch. A very well-made family flick.

Breathe (2014)

English I really like Mélanie Laurent, but with this movie, I didn’t even feel like watching it to the end. The girls tried really hard, but in the end it was for naught because they didn’t come up with anything original. A classically average drama from the world of contemporary France.

Sunbeat (2017)

English For the entire movie, you are watching an actress who – whether she wants it or not – keeps promenading herself before the camera in her panties. On top of that, she keeps getting molested by her Hispanic-looking husband and a couple of little girls keep running around, around whom the movie was supposed to revolve. But when, after an hour of watching, you feel that not a hair on the man’s chest has moved in the plot, it becomes really hard to look for any reason to feel happy about this film. The only positive aspect is the cinematography – it produces very nice shots – but the premise is about nothing at all.
