The Wild Soccer Bunch – The Legend Lives! (2015) Boo!

English At a first glance it is a children’s adventure with soccer theme. That doesn’t sound bad. And since I usually don’t trust reviews on this site that much, I watched this German gem. But I got incredibly annoyed watching it. It reminded me of the stupidest children’s film ever – Spy Kids (the first movie was so so, but the other ones sucked) and I realized that this movie is probably even worse!!!

Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)

English A huge surprise for me personally. The director S. Craig Zahler has already proven to me with the movie Bone Tomahawk this year that he has some potential, but I really had no idea that Vince Vaughn would convince me after his bad performance in True Detective. A very decent revenge film, which takes place in numerous locations, but even though we see the prison most of the time, you can’t say it is a prison drama. On the contrary. Imagine a simple PC game with a clear target in the beginning and you go through the first, second, third, fourth level… to finally get to the final boss. This film is that simple. Simple, but harsh, uncompromising and mainly the quality is really good. You will realize that in the fighting scenes. And you will also realize that Vince has a gift which he has never shown in all of his comedies so far. Why? That’s a good question. Now I hope that he will have a chance to film better and more interesting films than those he’s done so far.

Logan (2017)

English There are many movies to give audience a chance to understand the character of Wolverine. In general, we all know what Hugh Jackman’s intentions were. Still he was one of the first superheroes to appear in Hollywood in the late 1990s and deserves tremendous respect for it. However, after all these years with Wolverine, I understand very well why the creators wanted to end Wolverine's movie journey. Once and for all. Until this day, I haven’t fully comprehended the films’ right order. True, I never really tried to find out but the movies didn’t make it easy for me either. Fortunately, the premise is very clear in this movie and it is not difficult. Quite the opposite. Hugh Jackman said his goodbyes with style, of course, so you can expect to see a great action ride with a main hero who in this film convinced me why I should never forget him. Thank you, Wolverine, and good bye!

Life (2017)

English An average sci-fi flick with slightly bad film effects. I am mentioning the effects on purpose, because this film is trying to copy the movie Gravity but you can clearly see that it can’t match its quality. On the other hand, the crew is great and all the actors are extraordinary and definitely won’t disappoint you. And the story? It couldn’t be simpler. It is a classic horror storyline where everybody dies in the end.

The Hippopotamus (2017)

English An unbelievably nice and crazy comedy with a sarcastic main hero who loves to curse and swear as a sailor in the worst dirty port pub. If I watch it again, I would probably like it even more as it would be easier to get through all that sarcasm and actually understand the story.

Contre ton cœur (2017)

English A very difficult film, which tries very hard to be interesting, but with its length it creates a huge wall for the viewers to climb over. And that length is really just the beginning of everything wrong with this film...

Scarred Hearts (2016)

English 141 minutes is way too much for a story of a boy who is lying on a bed in a Romanian sanatorium the whole movie and pretends to be in pain. On the other hand the director Radu Jude did a great and original job. The visual part is as good as Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel. That comparison is really on point. There are many unforgettable statical scenes that focus on the main protagonist and somewhere in the background someone whines in pain, but I still felt that it all lacked some decent touch of absurdity that could soften the cruel pre-war satire. Still it was very good, interesting, original and imaginative. It was only after the end of the film that I found out that Max Blecher was an actual writer and the whole story gained more respect from me.

Mes vies de chien (2017)

English Lasse Hallström knows how to milk audience’s emotions. He can even get emotions from a story whose premise goes against the beliefs of all of the Christian society. He doesn’t send the dog’s soul to the dog heaven but he sends it back on Earth to reincarnate into another dog and he makes him, according to the film’s purpose, look for his one true master. If only he didn’t remember all of his previous lives, but he does. No need to tell that the story is very chaotic but on the other hand, as I have already mentioned, the director did a great job and shows us that he can make a film with a dog in a main role that can make even penguins cry. So in the end this is a very rare and very emotional animal story and you will absolutely love it.

Living and Other Fictions (2016)

English After reading the synopsis, I braced myself for what was to come. In the end, it is not so explicit. But when somebody puts the effort into making a movie about disabled people, they should be more skillful at introducing to the viewer the problems of the main characters in a way that gets you closer to them. This way, it came across as very unpersonal, inaccessible, reserved and distant. Over the years, I have learnt that movies about disabled people can be made with a feeling for the filmmaking craft. But this one only points out the issues, which on the one hand is no small thing, but as a movie, it’s simply average.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017)

English It’s the night after I saw it and I actually don’t know whether Disney’s shift of the saga is good or not. The first part of the new trilogy was great, there’s no denying that. The characters were interesting and the reference to the original story was obvious. Here, things are no different. The entire premise is actually centered around Luke Skywalker and it’s flawless. Also, the introduction of new worlds worked out perfect. At times, I was really enjoying the film’s cuteness when a new animal that hasn’t been seen yet made an appearance on the scene. Pretty much all those animals’ eyes were like Puss in Boots’ eyes in Shrek, so you can imagine how soft I was getting during every scene involving animals. On the other hand, I kept telling myself that it seemed a bit too childish. The reviews mentioned that this episode is much darker than the previous parts, but for me, darkness looks a bit different than this. I think I would liken it to episode 2. This episode is sort of cute, a little childish, full of action and war. All in all, it’s actually quite good, but for me to give it a five-star review, the film would need to be more epic in relation to the entire Star Wars universe.
