The New Pope (2020) (series)

English The distinctive Italian director Paolo Sorrentino has served the audience another visual treat, with an extremely absorbing atmosphere, supported by an amazing soundtrack and spiced up with a good dose of provocation. It certainly hasn't lost any of its quality, appeal, and originality. Still, I must say that The New Pope does not have the strength of its predecessor from 2016. It's hard to say whether this was due to the initially almost non-existent presence of Jude Law, who was the alpha and omega of the series The Young Pope. Although John Malkovich did a great job as the most powerful man in the Catholic Church, it was only the last three episodes, in which Jude Law was once again in the limelight, that had the proper insight and punch. My Brilliant Friend - Season 1 (2018) (season)

English I've honestly never heard of the book version of My Brilliant Friend, let alone read it. However, after watching the first season of the series, I guess I'll have to rectify that given how much I liked it. However, I am currently looking forward to the second season. Then I'll be sure to elaborate a little more.

Zagros (2017)

English The mentality of the Kurds is different, and for Central Europeans, it's so distant that we can hardly understand the behavior of the main character towards the woman of his life. This film, however, is not only about whether love or honor will prevail in Zagros's internal struggle, but also about the consuming jealousy that persistently adds fuel to the fire until an uncontrollable conflagration erupts. Jealousy is indeed one of the human emotions that all of us have encountered at some point. As far as the story is concerned, I have to appreciate the fact that it is not clear until the last moment who is actually right and how it will all turn out. (75%)

The Professor (2018)

English Although The Professor tries to pass itself off as a comedy most of the time, it is ultimately a very moving film, centered on a dying university professor, disarmingly played by Johnny Depp, who drops interesting thoughts about life in between talking. The audience experience is enhanced by beautiful music. (80%)

Happy New Year (2019)

English If I watched this movie on New Year's Eve, I'd probably die of boredom. I have slightly different ideas about romance and I was looking for a comedy component in vain. At least the music was listenable. The cast didn't impress me much either. Perhaps the only one worth mentioning is the traditionally excellent Emília Vášáryová. (30%)

The Last Family (2016)

English I like Polish cinema, but I didn't like The Last Family at all. Tragic stories usually move me, but the film's treatment of the fate of the Beksiński family is coldly emotionless most of the time. My feelings are so contradictory that I cannot rate it better than three stars. However, the final title song blew me away, and I would easily give it five stars. (60%)

Backtrace (2018)

English Within the silly script, the guys play with guns at times, and to make matters worse, Sylvester Stallone directs them a bit. The filmmakers probably assumed that this would satisfy the audience. Yeah, that didn't work for me at all. (25%)

Nitram (2021)

English This is a rather raw probe into the life of a socially maladjusted man. Right from the opening minutes, it is clear that Nitram is not going to be a hero you want to root for. Even though the story flows at a rather leisurely pace and there are no torrents of blood or emotional pressure, I dare say that the overall film is much more hard-hitting than if it were the other way around. Caleb Landry Jones fully deserves recognition and accolades for his absolutely perfect portrayal in the title role. (80%)

Line of Duty (2019)

English The online news reporting of the two girls pretending to be big reporters is hard to bear. However, the pace at which most of the action takes place is so frantic that I didn't actually get bored. I will thus turn a blind eye to certain illogicalities in the story and the overly optimistic ending in this case. (55%)

Román pro pokročilé (2019)

English The sexist wannabe jokes and innuendos disgusted me so much that it took a lot of effort to finish watching this stupid parody of a film. Not to mention that the sponsors dictated half the plot to Zita Marinovová. (15%)
