Gia (1998) (TV movie)

English Let's face it, there isn't really that much evidence that Angie is truly a great actress because often she just played in the mainstream where those abilities aren't so apparent, but Gia shows how captivatingly spontaneous, tender, beautiful, and ugly she can be and how she's not afraid of it. It's her gig.

Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1999)

English A great example of how Jim Jarmusch is versatile when it comes to genre, and even though it's not a frantic action spectacle bursting with money poured into it, it's all the smarter for it. And of course, there will be action, make no mistake about it. There's a lot of shooting here, and it's quite inventive at times, you'll be surprised. Plus, it's really smart.

Carnival of Blood (1970)

English The only familiar face in the movie is Burt Young, whom you'll recognize from the Rocky boxing series. He doesn't turn out to be a great actor, but he handled the silly role he was given quite well. Carnival of Blood is a cheap slasher film, and it shows, but it's precisely this trashiness that makes it something you can endure if you have the stomach for such films.

Il Generale Della Rovere (1959)

English Roberto Rossellini knew how to make movies and is one of the Italian directors whom I genuinely like. I haven't been dissatisfied with any of his films so far, which is pretty good, though admittedly I certainly haven't seen all of them, not even close. But this one has a good story, a good setting, and an interesting resolution that manages to captivate.

Life with Jester (2013)

English I'm actually still discovering Helena Třeštíková for myself because the only documentary I've seen from her so far is Katka, but it's a documentary that left an impression on me. Life with Jester again nicely shows how people can change, how their opinions and their attitudes to life change. And perhaps it also reveals who they are.

Deep Valley (1947)

English The story is good, although it's relatively classic - a girl has two suitors, one of whom is a jerk and the other one is pretty cool. It's probably quite logical that she chooses the jerk, even though both he and the other guy have something that will bother you about them. Maybe the jerk's a criminal, but he's a great guy otherwise. It's just a shame that the film overall is unnecessarily cutesy.

George Harrison: Living in the Material World (2011)

English Every documentary featuring the Beatles or at least one of their members interests me, even more so when it's directed by such a film master as Martin Scorsese. George Harrison was one of the quieter members, but he was no less creative and a great innovator. The finale is a bit too contrived for tears, but it does leave an impact.

Gantz: O (2016)

English I was surprised at how good this was. I don't just mean the visual aspect, although that is quite stunning, but I'm more referring to how excellently they managed to adapt the manga into a 3D form while still making the individual characters recognizable. In terms of plot, it closely resembles the manga, so there's a lot of action and the story isn't anything special, but it works, unlike other Gantz films.

Mad in Italy (2011)

English Mad in Italy doesn't have very good acting, which brings the film down even more. Otherwise, you might just reach for the average, but like this, it's just a peculiar horror attempt that tries to be somewhat original in its attempt to scare, but it fails to make an impact with its originality, even by the fact that it's simply too cheap. It's very noticeable, and in this case, it really hurts the film quite a bit.

Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life (2010)

English Joann Sfar showcased his visual abilities here and directed a biographical film that also has a lot of fictionalized and specific elements about one of the greatest French musicians. Beautiful actresses were chosen for the roles of their older colleagues with whom Gainsbourg had romances or even something more. But the most interesting thing is still the look inside.
