Lost Bullet (2020)

English The swan song of the extremely angular Renault 21 Turbo. The screenplay is naive and simple and basically it serves just as the driving force behind the dynamic action. The crashes are super, fights numerous. A slightly above-average French action snack.

Deadly Class (2018) (series)

English A modern-day Harry Potter. These kids aren’t learning to do magic, but to kill people. The movie offers unexpectedly well-thought-out character development, multi-layered heroes and lots of violence, blood and cursing. It draws on a wealth of cult films and is a derivative for sure. But it’s still entertaining with a lot of potential. The ending is as open as a gutted pig, so it’s duty bound to run a second season.

Sergio (2020)

English Sergio is a strange political/romantic drama with several shocking scenes (chopping off feet). The story jumps between the liberation of East Timor and explosions in Baghdad with several alarming hints that can be interpreted in all sorts of ways and that open up a lot of space for conspiracy theory aficionados. In terms of acting, the film is faultless; Moura and Ana de Armas are both excellent. The locations that they visit are a sight for sore eyes, just like Ana herself. It’s just a shame that the filmmakers wanted to avoid controversy and thus chose to whistle a safe love song.

The Last Dance (2020) (series)

English This is a fantastic documentary. Even though I’m not a huge fan of basketball, Jordan did have an influence on me. I even begged my parents to get me a ball.  Unfortunately, basketball shoes just weren’t available here then. Years later, I can appreciate certain nuances that weren’t important in those days and thanks to which everything about the end of the Bulls dynasty makes more sense. Lots of details, interesting opinions and expressions of emotion in a dynamic study of the life of a legend.

Entourage (2004) (series)

English A great series full of beautiful, naked girls, expensive cars and celebrities (both fictitious and real), memorable chauvinist lines, good friendship, unselfishness and hope for a second chance. It surprised me how much I warmed to the characters. Excellently acted, wonderfully written. I look forward to the feature-length movie.

Da 5 Bloods (2020)

English Four African-American Vietnam veterans go back to pick up the remains of a dead comrade and about 17 million dollars worth of gold bullion. They talk about brotherhood, get into arguments, want to kill themselves. They have a complicated, trying-to-be-cool greeting. Only the last hour - from the scene with the mine onward - is worth any attention. Spike Lee must have gone crazy, just like one of the protagonists (Paul? I think it was Paul), letting the film go on for a full two and a half hours. Waves of boring, would-be artistic detours (Martin Luther King and Marvin Gaye) glorifying blackness with no added value. The dialog is packed with unimportant details… these should have been left on the cutting-room floor. The actors’ performances, however, are superb, and Delroy Lindo is the best by far. The action is good and bloody and the conflict with the “gooks" was entertaining. If it had been ninety minutes long, it would have been pretty good. I usually enjoy treasure hunt films, but this is shiiiiit.

Entourage - Season 1 (2004) (season)

English A bunch of slackers and cameos by Hollywood stars. The well-written and acted primadonnas are fun to watch. Ari is awesome.

The Last Dance - Episode VII (2020) (episode)

English An incredibly sad passage in life. Jordan takes one blow after another and then is told he's not a nice person. Thanks a lot.

Rome - A Necessary Fiction (2007) (episode)

English The Women of Rome... A humorous intro, Octavianus as an über-asshole, and a final battle full of blood. The second season clearly surpasses the first.

Rome - Philippi (2007) (episode)

English The spectacular battle is the icing on the cake. A lot of storylines reach their conclusion and Marcus Antonius has some fantastic lines. Pullo’s visit to Cicero’s is one of the most bizarre killings of them all. The climax awaits behind the door. "Cut off his hands and nail them to the Senate door. I told the old fool I'd do it … Nobody can possibly say that I don't keep my word."
