Orphaned by the death of their father, Phyllis Warren and her younger brother Boots find themselves the owners of two race horses and a pile of debts. Charm Boy, Phyllis' horse, is the more promising of the two, but refuses to run unless Boots's steed Flasher is entered in the same race. After Charm Boy wins a competition, Phyllis enters him in a claiming race at Santa Anita. Charm Boy wins the race, but when Phyllis goes to the winner's circle, she is stunned to learn that Charm Boy was purchased just before the race, a legitimate sale because it was a claiming race.
