Madrid, in the late 1950s. In Franco's Spain, there is a severe housing crisis. Rodolfo and Petrita have been engaged for twelve years, and yearn to marry, but cannot until they have their own apartment. Desperate to find a place where they can be together and fulfill their vows of love, Rodolfo resigns himself to marrying his octogenarian landlady, Doña Martina Rodríguez, whom he believes is dying, so that he can inherit her splendid four-room home.
