An inspiring documentary that follows the story of one of Uganda’s unsung heroes – Robert Katende. Popularly known as ’Coach Robert’, he was able to transform a little unknown slum in the outskirts of Kampala, into an internationally recognized army of Chess Champions. After being disowned by his parents as a child and enduring life as a refugee during Uganda’s civil war, Robert had his share of hard life in the slums. When his parents died, life became even more unbearable and all he could think of was committing suicide; but he didn’t get to do it, as he couldn’t even afford to buy the rat poison he needed. What turned his life around were his excellent soccer skills, which allowed him to ride on numerous soccer scholarships until he graduated with a degree in Engineering. While it was soccer that gave him a second chance, it was chess that allowed him to provide opportunities and hope for so many others around him. (Pan African Film Festival)
