With their country at war and her parents' marriage falling apart, 12-year-old Dalya and her mother leave Aleppo, Syria, to join her brother in Los Angeles. Together they begin to navigate life in a new country. Dalya – the only girl who wears a headscarf at her all-girls Catholic school – balances her father's expectations with her developing ideals, while her mother regains her sense of self-affirmation.
