As a middle school student, Cocona has been trying to decide what to do with her life. Magical Girl, however, wasn't a career path that she'd ever considered. When suddenly a strange girl named Papika thrusts her into a secret organization called Flip Flap, Coconas outlook does a radical flip-flop. Her views start to change when she is dragged into an alternate dimension called Pure Illusion where she's charged with gathering crystal shards and fighting strange creatures. Now, between running missions and facing off against a rival organization, Cocona doesn't have much time to consider alternate career choices. What are these shards, and why is gathering them so important? There's a mystery to be solved and multiple worlds to be saved in Flip Flappers! (Madman Entertainment)

English If you want to see some colorful, strange illusions full of movement, then you can go into the woods and pick some of those magic mushrooms or maybe get some LSD somewhere. However, if you do not want to risk your health, you could try and watch some anime series, or rather, should I say, this anime series. Flip Flappers is such a freaky, colorful, energetic show with quite a mysterious backstory. Well, all the colors, ideas, and the execution are impressive! There are several animation styles throughout this anime series, depending on the worlds the main protagonists are traversing. The narrative goes through different phases, so it ends up feeling like more than just the developing (and perhaps more than just a) friendship of the madcap and hyper-active Papika with the pretty much ordinary Cocona. Oh, and the final storylines about family values, friendship, and so on sounds much more interesting inside this colorful, crazy version than they would be if portrayed in a normal show. Then there is the very nice melodic ending theme tune, which I think is the anime season Fall 2016. Flip Flappers is definitely one of the most original production I have seen this year, at least in terms of its animation, likable characters, and a nicely developing narrative. There is a lot actually going on most of the time even though often nothing of substance actually happens. I did not find it boring at all, and sometimes it gave me food for thought, and most of all, I was enjoying the imagination that the anime's authors put into this show. 3Hz animation studio has once again made something right up my street, so I will reward this show and once again be subjectively biased because "I love, love, love this!" 8.8/10.
