The protagonist of the story that takes place in the happy old days is Ádám Gyuszi, the bad-egg, son of a provincial lawyer studying in Pest to become a lawyer. The young man's return to Kőhegy, his home town, is in itself an intrusion on the uneventful, boring life of the place. He decides to turn his father's small business venture, now anything but a going concern, into a flourishing business. He also decides to get a husband for his sister, now almost a "spinster" at 23. He carries through his plans. His father's business is on the right track, while Sárika is married to Terebessy, a rich and pompous landowner living in the neighbourhood, whom his sister has been in love with since she was a little girl. Then he himself gets married to Olga, his childhood love. (official distributor synopsis)
