Dr. Visky András, a despaired young doctor out of job, decides to kill himself, but Smirgli, a tramp whose abode is under the bridge, holds him back, saving his life, deciding to take Visky with him for his next "mission". They break into professor Soltész's flat. In the meantime, an ill patient turns up. Smirgli manages to escape, but Visky does not leave the flat, he gives medical assistance to the old patient, instead. Entering the flat, Soltész holds the young man at gunpoint, thinking he is a real burglar. When he learns that the young man is a doctor himself and is out of job, Soltész decides to take him on as an assistant. Visky and Ágnes, the professor's wife, fall in love with each other, but the young man cannot bear the thought of ruining the marriage of his benefactor, therefore he sets out on a trip abroad.
