The Hunter is the story of Martin, a skilled and ruthless mercenary sent into the Tasmanian wilderness on a hunt for a tiger believed to be extinct. Hired by an anonymous company that wants the tiger's genetic material, Martin arrives in Tasmania posing as a scientist. He proceeds to set up base camp at a broken-down farmhouse, where he stays with a family whose father has gone missing. Usually a loner, Martin becomes increasingly close to the family; however, as his attachment to the family grows, Martin is led further down a path of unforeseen dangers, complicating his effort to complete his deadly mission. Based on the acclaimed novel by Julia Leigh, The Hunter is a story about the human condition, the choices we make and the implications they have. (Les Films Séville)

English The Hunter does not seek to be an outdoor adventure or a thriller. Willem Dafoe’s quest for a rare and almost surely extinct animal gradually gives way to a new storyline involving getting closer to a family that offers him a safe haven in this inhospitable place, and perhaps a promise of a new, more meaningful life. The film has a great atmosphere and is unpredictable, but it looks as if it’s unsure what is essential for its dramatic arc and message. In the end, it becomes a mildly philosophical, mildly existential and mildly ecological drama that misses the mark. ()

English A fine drama about the hunt for the last Tasmanian tiger of its kind. A solid story, though it may seem rather watered down to some, and an excellent Willem Dafoe. Beautiful scenery. ()
