The film adaptation of the famous novel by the world-renowned Finnish writer Mika Waltari deals with the devastating fatal desire of the aggressive young man Kauko for a neighborhood girl named Osmi. The bleak, fatalist story full of nihilist atmosphere and decadent behavior of the characters is draft as a memory. At the bed of a dead woman who, according to Kauko’s words, “was different from the others,” the broken protagonist on a rainy night recapitulates their long-term relationship driven by passion and mutual hatred. In spite of a short footage, the film covers a long period of time and also a series of storyline twists based on the reunions and separations of Kauko and Osmi. The story follows their lifelong communication disagreements and the problematic finding of a common path that is already condemned to the tragic end. The film is dominated by the unforgettable acting of Jussi Jurkka in the role of the insidious amoral troublemaker Kauko. (Noir Film Festival)
