Bárány Sándor is a shy young substituting teacher of arithmetic in White Rose, a ladies boarding-school. He falls in love with Lugossy Eszter, one of his students, a solitary and sad girl nicknamed Mouse. Eszter's parents having got a divorce, she never has any visitors. Not even during the summer holiday do they come to take her away. Eszter's father is on his way to the Palace Hotel in Lillafüred, where he is to go on holiday with a dancer, his girlfriend. This is where Bárány takes a job during the holidays. Eszter and the other students who stay in the boarding-house for the summer also go for an excursion to Lillafüred. In the hotel, Eszter meets Bárány, who acts as a go-between to help her parents be reunited. Both parents agree happily to their daughter being married to the young teacher of arithmetic.
