The students of the College of Forestry and Mining in Selmecbánya are regular visitors in the pawnshop of Mélius Mátyás. They are said to be lucky whenever they find Málika, Mélus Mátyás's younger daughter, a warm-hearted girl, in the shop serving customers as she always takes pity on the impecunious students. Helén is Mr. Mélius's elder daughter and also his pride. She, unlike her sister, is a real business woman. Helén's father is determined to bequeath his pawnshop to her, and has already picked a businessman from Lőcse for her as her future husband, thinking that even a woman like her would be in need of the support of a man. Helén, however, is in love with Cseróczy, a careless student. The young man makes a promise to Helen, saying he is ready to mend his ways, but don't keep his promise, therefore Helén decides to marry the man her father has picked for her. During the engagement party she suddenly changes her mind and disappears only to turn up in Cseróczy's flat. (official distributor synopsis)
