Guided by strong performances (led by non-professional actors), writer/director Seric Aprymov’s film is an engaging and poignant look at a young man’s discovery of both himself and the wider world around him. Lost in a remote Kazakh town populated by eccentric, yet grounded, characters, The Village explores people’s differing views on social issues, smartly looking for the answers amongst the absurdity. Gorgeously shot, this film is a meditative understanding of the world around us. (Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival)
