The film is put at the beginning of the century in Sárszeg, following the humiliation and collapse of a high-school teacher. Novák Antal was left by his wife, he raises his daughter Hilda alone. The only joy in life for him is his class preparing for the maturation exam. But Liszner Vili, son of the grocer, fails at the exam despite all the tutelage of Novák. The cruel boy takes revenge on Novák with his companions, beating him up on the deserted street. In the meantime Hilda runs away with one of Novák's favourite pupils, Tibor. The last drop is the defaming article of the local paper scandal mongering on these painful events: the old teacher shoots himself in the head in the physical laboratory.
