The scene is Ukraine. In 1943, after the Hungarian' defeat at the river Don, soldier Balogh decides to visit his family. He is under the gallows already, but he is still unable to understand that as a deserter, he is going to be executed for high treason. The camp is hit by an air raid alarm right in the moment of the execution, and the soldier disappears. His fellows whisper about a miracle that could not have been performed by anybody else than "the Saint", Kaszap István. The chaplain finds a piece of Balogh's clothes, however, and he is the only one who knows that the soldier has really died. Later, at the canonization ceremony of Kaszap he can not reveal the truth. The burden on his conscience cracks the chaplain. (official distributor synopsis)
