This film portrait of respected writer and bohemian Kaf? Nagai presents a nostalgic picture of the life and the morals of the pre-War decades in Tokio's red-light district of Tamanoi. The story about Nagai's flings, and especially about his relationship with mesmerising courtesan Oyuki, was conceived by the director as a celebration of sexuality liberated from moralist prejudice of modern times.
