The corpulent and ageing Ivicz, once an excellent baker, works as a deliverer now. He lives alone. At the weekends following the toilsome weekdays he is the boss. He regularly travels to the country, to work as the incorruptible referee of third class national soccer games. The linesmen, the small muck, Fedák and the womaniser, Gadácsi also come here to run away from petty and boring everyday life. They all expect something to happen, to be mentioned in the sports papers at least. The small town's confectioner woman, the sad-eyed mother of two children, also expects comfort, but Ivicz, pondering on the match and the past, does not notice her emotions.
