João Viana (1966, Huambo, Angola) first studied law at the University of Coimbra in Portugal and then film in Porto. He has worked in the areas of production, sound, storyboard, directing and screenwriting. His short film A Piscina, which he co-directed with Iana Viana, screened at the Venice Film Festival in 2004 and is the most-awarded Portuguese short film ever. His second short Alfama has already screened at over 50 festivals and has won 10 prizes. His first feature length film A "Batalha de Tabatô" received Honoroble mention for Best Debut at Berlinale.
