Biography

Athina Rachel Tsangari is the most well known director alongside director Yorgos ­­Lanthimos of the Greek New Wave and was the assistant producer of his most renowned film Dogtooth. Tsangari left for the US as a young nineteen year old and stayed in the US for 12 years, studying Performing Arts in a New York University, which according to her, taught her a lot.

Tsangari's debut as a director was a "Sci-fi-Roadmovie" The Slow Business of Going (2000), the film was noted in small festivals but she had to wait for ten years to direct her next feature film that took her to her international breakthrough. At the same time that Greece was hit with the economical crisis the film Attenberg (2011) was completed; deep, national, special features can be seen in this film.

Tsangari's cinematic influences stretch from Monty Python to Fassbinder, Bresson and Godard. Tsangari has remarked: "I prefer biology or zoology. These are my tools."
