John Sturges was an American director best known for action-inflected Westerns and tense ensemble pieces like Bad Day at Black Rock (1955), Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957), The Magnificent Seven (1960), and The Great Escape (1963). He is often credited for the strong character-based drama he brought to the genre material he worked with.
