Biography
Danish director and writer Lars von Trier has after a number of commercials, music videos and TV films received attention thanks to his feature film The Element of Crime (1984). In 1987 he made the film Epidemic and three years later the film Europa (1991) which won the prize for Best Artistic Contribution at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. His most awarded film Breaking the Waves (1996) won the Jury Prize in Cannes, Academy Award for Emily Watson and the EFA Award for best film. First von Trier's film based on the principles of the Dogme 95 manifesto was Idiots (Idioterne). It was followed by the award winning TV Series The Kingdom (Riget) and films such as Dancer in the Dark (2000), Dogville (2003), Antichrist (2009), Melancholia (2011) and his latest project Nymphomaniac I. and II. Von Trier often shoots digitally and operates the camera himself, preferring to continuously shoot the actors in-character without stopping between takes.
