Liu Yu was born in 1981 in Beijing, and graduated from the Department of Film Production at the Central Academy of Drama. He worked as a screenwriter and TV programme director before making his feature debut, The Blinding Sunlight (2012). The film was presented at several international festivals (San Sebastian, Chicago and Montreal, among others), winning the Special Jury Prize at Cairo and Best Screenwriting Award at the Beijing New Directors Film Festival. One Hundred and Fifty Years of Life is his second feature.
