Biography

Choreographer and artistic director of the Ballet Preljocaj, Angelin Preljocaj (1957) has been living and working in Aix-en-Provence since 1996. He began his career studying classical dance before turning to contemporary dance with Karin Waehner at the Schola Cantorum. In 1984 he made his debut as a choreographer by teaming up with Michel Kelemenis to create Aventures Coloniales, a successful duet presented at the Montpellier Festival. He then founded his own company in 1985; in 1996, it was restyled as the Ballet Preljocaj - National Choreographic Centre of Aix-en-Provence. In 1992, Angelin received the Grand Prix National de la Danse from the French Ministry of Culture. In 1998, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur, and in 2006 he was named Officier de l'ordre du Mérite. In parallel with his dance career, Angelin has also made a number of short films, including Un trait d'union and Annonciation, which earned him the Vidéo-danse First Prize in 1992 and the Prague Video Festival Prize in 1993 respectively, along with the Grand Prix du Film d'Art in 2003. In 2009, he was awarded a Globe de Cristal for Snow White as best dance performance of the year; it was later released on DVD by MK2. This year, Angelin with his wife Valérie Müller made his first feature film, Polina, danser sa vie.
