Biography

Béla Tarr began his career as an amateur director at the age of sixteen years. He went on to work at the Balázs Béla Stúdió, Hungary's most important experimental film workshop, where he directed his first feature film, Family Nest (1977). Outstanding in his filmography are works including Kárhozat (Damnation, 1988), Werckmeister harmóniák (Werckmeister Harmonies, 2000), presented at the Berlinale Forum, A londoni férfi (The Man from London, 2007), which competed at Cannes, and A torinói ló (The Turin Horse, 2011), winner at Berlin of the Jury Grand Prix and of the FIPRESCI Prize. In 2013 he was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. Sátántangó, won the Caligari Award at Berlin in 1994.
