Unleashed (2016)

English It’s a pretty crazy movie with a girl who doesn’t know what she wants in the leading role. She lives with a dog and a cat. After one night the cat and the dog turn into humans and they start pursuing the girl. The movie is full of absurdity but it’s very sweet. I wasn’t laughing hard watching it but it was quite nice.

Les Yeux grands fermés (1999)

English I was waiting to watch this movie for an awfully long time. And when it finally happened, I had a hard time to accept its poetics for the first twenty minutes of the movie. The storytelling is slow and intensive but after half an hour it gets faster and it turns into a decent psychological flick with a mysterious atmosphere of 90s thrillers. After all I have to admit it was pretty clear that this is Stanley Kubrick’s film. Sometimes I felt I was not watching Eyes Wide Shut but The Shinning sequel. The camera shots or an intensive piano music confirmed that this film is again a completely unique experience for the audience. The end could have been a bit more daring and it didn’t have to end with simple ‘fuck’ but otherwise it was great. True Kubrick. It’s hard to find similar directors nowadays…

Please Stand By (2017)

English Dakota Fanning very realistically portrays an autistic girl, but the storyline doesn’t differ from every typical road movie. Three stars are enough for this kind of a film.

Combat de profs (2017)

English A really cool American comedy with lots of profanity. And I liked that the most. The movie is very sincere and enjoyable and that is thanks to its humor. What else do you want from an American comedy?

Patrick Melrose (2018) (series)

English A great TV series from the world of the young, promising and rich who are on top of that under the influence of drugs, booze and a despotic father who takes whatever he wants. A harsh reflection of a certain sort of people and a certain period, ruled by Benedict Cumberbatch and his almost demonic way of acting. It’s a pity it was bit too long for the 5-star rating. The story could be easily reduced to a length of a normal movie. It is still a very good dramatic piece with a strong storyline, but it is a bit lacking in the finale.

The Italian Key (2011)

English This movie is a crazy trip. You are watching it, you know the actors suck but you are not sure whether it is the intention or not (after all, why would it be?), but the camera, the surroundings and the atmosphere are so breathtaking that it started to remind me of Tim Burton’s Big Fish in some parts. I don’t get it. Why would anybody make a movie like this? But I finished it so I give 3 stars although it objectively should be even less.

Hotel (2004)

English The film tries to give an uncertain scary impression, not exactly showing the specific evil in the hotel, but at the same time you can feel it emanating from all the walls of all the floors. The atmosphere is very good. The problem was the main character who didn’t actually react to all this evil and seemed rather unaffected by it. And so was I, with the only difference that unlike her nothing really scared me there, and I was rather falling asleep watching it.

Traces of Sin (2016)

English The Japanese cinematography in turn amazes and disappoints me. This is the second time I am watching a Japanese movie with an interesting criminal plot which was destroyed by an unbalanced storyline and the inability to tell a relatively simple story. The first time it was Rage and this time I have a problem with this movie. Traces of Sin has such a simple storyline and such a good director of photography that even though I suffered because of the confusing script, I was amazed by some very nice shots.

London (2005)

English Miss London is quite a crazy girl. However, Jason Statham and his toupee, which I thought was a wig the whole movie, balances the craziness in a very solid way. But as a small-scale film, London is a decent experience. I, however, won’t watch it again unless to prove other Jason Statham fans that he’s not always been bald in movies…

The Old Gun (1975)

English Based by the title, I originally thought the film will be about some old hag. Only little before the start of the movie I read the resume and I was really excited. A war theme and by good old French filmmakers? I couldn’t be disappointed. And I wasn’t. In the first half of the film you get the reason for revenge and in the second half Philippe Noiret creates a character I would never guess he could – a character of a man who takes revenge. And trust me, if you cross a path with a man who seeks revenge during war, you can count yourself lucky he is not after you. Of course that’s different with a movie, which you are watching with bated breath… that’s how powerful the old French filmmakers from the 70s can be.
