Last Vegas (2013)

English I love these types of movies when it’s painfully obvious that the American filmmaking elite has only made a movie to spend some of the excess dollars in their budgets by the end of the year that they’ve got left from making other movies. Nothing happens in the movie at all. Some ace actors get together to play blackjack in Vegas, they drink some twelve-year-old Tullamore Dew and suddenly the end credits start rolling, everyone gets up and goes to their families.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (2016)

English I don’t even feel like this movie is a comedy. It views the situation in Afghanistan rather cynically and – in my opinion – relatively realistically. Tina Fey plays a real cow of a journalist who managed to piss me off several times throughout the movie. But after all, journalists can’t do it any other way and they mostly stick their nose where it doesn’t belong, as long as they get interesting shots. They selfishly don’t care about the fact that they threaten everyone around them. But American journalist Tina Fey doesn’t just attacks journalism here. She calls a spade a spade even when it comes to religion and so Afghanistan gets a thrashing, which is actually good. It increases the realism and I’d really like to know where they shot the movie, because I felt like I was really with them in Kabul. However, at the same time, the movie mentions the American army, which had nothing to do there at the time and behaved just like NATO in the early 1990s in Yugoslavia. The American Journalist is sort of amovie non-partisan and Russian filmmaking propaganda has a lot to learn from it. There’s also a lot of booze flowing in it, and here and there, there’s a Muslim who’s helping the Western world. It’s nothing for the locals, but it’s sufficient as a peek behind the curtain.

Marius (2013)

English This is the second movie I’ve seen by Daniel Auteuil, whom I like under different circumstances, but as far as directing goes, I can’t get over the movie’s storytelling. This is the second time I’ve seen him tell stories from recent history in quite an old-fashioned way and so it gets a little boring. It’s like British Jane Eyre, but in a French environment. However, Marius was lucky that the environment it takes place in played into its cards. For example, the scenes in the bar with Daniel had a touch of absolutely amazing human kindness that only a French movie could come up with. Otherwise, it was really quite boring because of the story and it was nothing more than a classic romance drama. Just with a somewhat better actors and a nicer environment.

Daddy's Home (2015)

English Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg go to extremes in this comedy; they took an ordinary life situation and created a comedy that explicitly called for it. What is nice, however, is that they were able to leave out the gross stuff and based the jokes on the individual sketches. In some parts, the jokes seemed really great, and even though the entire movie isn’t like that, those few scenes definitely make it worth it to watchthis piece and relax a bit.

Beste Chance (2014)

English One of the girls was a cow, the other was stupid. Together, a German movie was made about them, which reached to as far as to India. While I was watching this movie, I realized that German cinematography can still manage to be pretty stupid, even though it hasn’t been very successful at that in the recent years.

Innocence of Memories (2015)

English A strange movie that tries to present a fictional story in the form of a wannabe narrative documentary, which is intertwined with the reality of today’s Istanbulin quite an interesting form. This movie is powerful due to the shots of Istanbul itself and then mainly thanks to the form in whichit tells the story of one unhappy love. I admit that at first, I didn’t know what to think, but the magic of Istanbul absolutely enchanted me later on. In fact, I must say that I don’t even know how to rate such a film. On the one hand, when I was watching, I thought that it would be enough for me to just listen to the commentary, but on the other, it would be a shame to miss the breathtaking visuals.

Godless (2016)

English If the main character in her vintage jacket straight out of a Bulgarian second-hand clothes store didn’t look like Anička Dajdou whom I watch from time to time when I come home after work, I would probably be able to see this movie in a different light. But who knows, because with Godless, it’s very hard to search for something at least a little bit joyful. European dramas have a certain air to them and if they are shot uncompromisingly and inaccessible to the viewer, then it is difficult for anyone else to get through them. For example, the film was shot in Bulgaria, which is probably the worst European country, not only due to its appearance as well as its human population, but it’s also because it’s morally closer to Chad in central Africa than to a country that should be relatively close to the Czech Republic thanks to, for example, Slavism. From the beginning, Godless looks like the Czech movie Home Care, but after ten minutes, you will immediately understand what this movie is about and realize that you probably won’t see any jokes in here. There’s no jokes, there’s also no hope in sight. Disgust, death, extinction, loneliness, darkness – anything but hope. The only upsides were the camerawork and the ending, where they said everything that this film tried to convey during its course. But I’ve never seen a crazier European drama that would make its country into a worse hellhole than this one did. Either there’s something to it or the Bulgarian filmmaker is a proper self-sadist.

Zootopia (2016)

English Ananimated moviethat combines adult life with an animal life intended for children. Zootopia is cute, kind, funny and here and there, there’s a stellar joke for the adults watching, because the universe brings us true gifts every other day. I even think that the sloths at the DMV were probably the best scene I’ve ever seen in a 3D-animated movie. However, at the same time, it still maintains a pleasant, cute and childish wit that the even children will appreciate. Zootopia was simply a success.

One Christmas Eve (2014) (TV movie)

English When confronted with this family, you should put all sorts of four-leaf clovers, lucky horseshoes, rabbit’s feet or lucky coins into your pockets. You will need them. I haven’t ever seen a family with worse luck on Christmas Day than the one in this movie. Throughout the eighty minutes, I didn’t get to see any miraculous filmmaking, but on the other hand, I watched the whole thing and a few times, I even laughed from the bottom of my heart.

Tomorrowland (2015)

English Cute, a little bit stupid, non-offensive. What more can I say about Tomorrowland? I can see that the movie had great ambitions; digitally, it was amazing and George Clooney wouldn’t take just any gig, but the overall story is so strange that it’s actually a good thing that they only ended up shooting one movie. The first time, it was okay with my eyes half-closed, but if I were to watch it again, I’d have to have a blindfold on.
