The Irishman (2019)

English Since Casino in 1995 I haven't seen a Martin Scorsese film that has managed to pull me in as much as The Irishman did, in fact I wouldn't be afraid to say it's even better than Casino. After about ten minutes I didn't even feel like I was watching a Netflix novelty, but I had the impression that they were simply putting some good old classic and time-tested honest gangster movie on TV. And it certainly owes this not only to the (amazing) stunts that rejuvenated the actors so believably I didn't even think about it, but mainly to the elaborate, well-acted and directed story. Scorsese's black mob humor, Pacino's explosiveness, De Niro's unreadability, and Pesci's everything – it’s an actor's dream ensemble in a perfect spectacle that does whatever it wants with the viewer for three and a half hours.

Step Brothers (2008)

English I like Will Ferrell most of the time, John C. Reilly only occasionally... But here they're both equal:they're as awkward as most of the film, in which probably only Mary Steenburgen and Richard Jenkins managed to entertain me. Otherwise, it was an unnecessarily roundabout, silly to the point of disgusting spectacle in the style of last year's Holmes & Watson.

Watchmen - This Extraordinary Being (2019) (episode)

English I wrote about the last episode that it was probably the best of the bunch so far. But this one is somewhere else again – further, higher... It's one big, wonderfully shot black and white flashback with quanta of directorial ideas, a powerful surprise story that just has everything. Keep it up, the end is around two corners and it’s all fitting together very nicely.

Earthquake Bird (2019)

English If this film hits the mark (you need to be in the mood for something slower, that's all about the characters and what looks beautiful, you should not be looking for a thriller full of surprises), you'll be satisfied. I was very impressed by the ending, and it's "just" a quiet conversation between two people. Alicia Vikander is great.

Blades of Glory (2007)

English A little Zoolander on ice, a little Dodgeball, Semi-Pro, Talladega Nights... But still fun. I like Will Ferrell that way, and I like how Blades of Glory simultaneously makes fun of sports movies while keeping the story about friendship pretty sincere. Many of the scenes are really hilariously funny, but there are some slightly (not too many) weaker moments.

Drunk Parents (2019)

English A really bad comedy that isn't even funny. I am searching my memory in vain to recall whether I've ever seen Salma Hayek or Alec Baldwin in a worse film, and I have the strong impression that I haven't, because the "jokes" aren't funny, the story makes no sense, Baldwin is desperately unbelievable as a bitter cynical loser in an expensive suit, and Salma Hayek is completely clueless.

Watchmen - Little Fear of Lightning (2019) (episode)

English I think it's one of the best episodes so far, if not the best altogether. It focuses on one character and explains a lot (thanks to her), but other questions remain and answers won't be far away. It's nice to see how well thought out it is, and I'm really enjoying Watchmen. I'm just curious if the President of the United States will make an appearance in a future episode.

Loves of a Blonde (1965)

English A beautiful film, more beautiful than I remembered it. And that's in spite of a lot of things that happen in it.

The Little Hours (2017)

English Certainly not blisteringly funny, but definitely a good comedy that thankfully doesn't just benefit from the characters behaving very contemporaneously in the Middle Ages, it cares about those characters too. The final crazy confrontation is irresistible, and the ending, like the tone of the whole film, is – unexpectedly – beautiful.

State of the Union (2019) (series)

English Polished dialogue with perfect acting, but be warned – the ten-minute episodes are tempting, but you'd better not watch too many of them in a row; keep your distance between them or you'll feel like the characters are trying to talk you to death. And that would be a shame, because State of the Union is a fine series.
