Birdboy (2010)

English So I was thinking that this movie wants to convey something serious, but somehow it just doesn't succeed with that depressive Burton-esque poetics. There are visually interesting ideas here, but unfortunately, that's all this little film offers. It's almost a pity because it definitely had potential.

The Arctic Circle (2010)

English Interesting, almost inventive, one might say, both in terms of the animation and in how the story is introduced. But then suddenly it's over, and you realize that nothing really happened, that the potential wasn't utilized at all, and that you were just watching how a fairly interesting puppet looked at something that suddenly appeared. That's not exactly much.

The Longest Week (2014)

English A romantic drama about how difficult it is to find someone you truly connect with, especially someone you wouldn't want just for their looks or for sex. It’s a film that typically gets stuck in genre clichés but aims to be dramatic, wanting to show that it can be interesting and poignant. Yet it unfortunately falls short, ending up as a superficial portrayal that reduces Olivia Wilde to just a pretty face.

How Green Was My Valley (1941)

English It's probably a good film that certainly has something to say, but on the other hand, I can't help but feel it could have been filmed even more dramatically, even more brutally, than it comes across. I think it would have only benefited the film. But even the way it is, it certainly works; it just speaks more to fans of older films, while for others, it might just be an old film.

The Inbetweeners 2 (2014)

English Yeah, those guys are assholes, but they did catch my attention in the first film, and the same is true here. I should probably give the series a try sometime because it seems to be worth it, at least according to the reviews. This is sometimes gross, sometimes genuinely funny, sometimes about nothing at all, and on top of that, we also get to see Australia. And of course, the girls with whom things are never simple.

The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore (2011)

English In books there is beauty, that much we probably know. This film presents it to us in a somewhat intriguing way. On the one hand, it's quite standard because it derives from "The Wizard of Oz," but on the other, it's unconventional because it's connected with a hurricane that actually ravaged New Orleans. The connection with this 3D animation is certainly strong and interesting.

The Immigrant (2013)

English A film with excellent performances that unfortunately left me rather cold. What Joaquin Phoenix especially demonstrates is truly amazing, but overall, it just didn't resonate with me. The arrival of the magician excited me, as I always have a weakness for them, but then suddenly nothing. Simply just another historical drama.

A Haunted House 2 (2014)

English A Haunted House 2 isn't a great comedy, but it still clicked for me. There are moments here that could easily hold up in a serious horror film, but most importantly, there are jokes that aren't just dumb. Yes, the banalities prevail, but this time I felt that someone tried and wanted the entertainment not to be completely stupid. It worked.

Netherland Dwarf (2008)

English It's a pretty interesting story about how sometimes we're searching for something we've already found and we just don't realize it yet. We simply don't see it. The rabbit is an interesting catalyst for events, but unfortunately, they are cut short quite early. Yes, you can imagine how it will continue, but I almost feel like the characters deserved a bit more. But some scenes will stick in your mind anyway.

Sergeant York (1941)

English Gary Cooper really carries this film. It would never have been the same without him. His gaze, his speech, and how he acts so simply and naturally are the highlights of a film about how one person's life can change, but the person might not. Or at least not that much. It’s a nice story about a person who didn't want to be great, but sort of became that way anyway. I guess I was expecting a slightly stronger experience, though.
