The Treasure of a Byzantine Merchant (1966)

English The first of Erben's Exner projects. It's a film riding on the frivolous mood of light-hearted 60s comedies, starring Gabriela Vránová in a befitting beret and pompom. Vala is sexy, and the other characters are like cut-outs from well-illustrated anecdotes. It could have been a nice film series, but the search for ever new ways to adapt Erben's Captain Exner for the movie theater caused inconsistencies, which in practice resulted in no representative DVD series and only one book with a film cover. Fans who are collectors are therefore disappointed.

Egon Schiele: Death and the Maiden (2016)

English Schiele's subject matter is somehow not saturated in cinema, so I very much welcome the new biography. It’s clear, emotional, and inspiring. And it beautifully winks at the intermingling of Schiele and Klimt. Now I can happily return to Herbert Vesely's older film Egon Schiele: Excess and Punishment. I am looking forward to it, for I have been emboldened by this fresco.

Big Little Lies - You Get What You Need (2017) (episode)

English The final montage is an excellent blend of various emotions and feelings, and it gives us the opportunity to let the new experience that Big Little Lies has brought reverberate. However, the way the major twists and turns were revealed was sometimes too much of a stretch. There were several moments that were downright crutch-like, and I'd quite like to know if it was Moriarty or David E. Kelley who ran out of steam. But I'd still like to experience another series in this story because the micro world is built up very nicely.

Big Little Lies - Living the Dream (2017) (episode)

English Around the third episode, I'm already toying with the idea of making time to read a Liane Moriarty book in the future. And I'm beginning to believe that TV drama certainly isn’t hurting Nicole. She knew exactly why she was co-producing the show.

Big Little Lies - Serious Mothering (2017) (episode)

English I'm returning to Big Little Lies after a hiatus and slowly reassessing my interest in it. Stories of individual mothers of children who have just gone into first grade don't sound like the biggest draw in the world, but if the mothers are great characters with interesting stories, they may indeed get attention. There's a wonderful animalistic relationship played by Nicole Kidman and Alexander Skarsgård, then there's the plotter Reese Witherspoon and more and more moms who are most certainly not on vacation while raising children.

Big Little Lies - Somebody's Dead (2017) (episode)

English It's not easy to build a relationship with a series that, if watched episodically, loses its main charm. The combination of character introductions, retroactive comments, and the failure to anchor the main theme, should create potential interest, but it may not do so for everyone. In short, after watching the pilot, I certainly wasn't thrilled.

Zlatý hlas (1984)

English A very mediocre documentary answering the question of how good Ema Destinnová's voice was. Several recordings and photographs are accompanied by selected quotations recited by Božidara Turzonovová, who lent her face to Emma in Krejčík's Divine Emma.

Peacemaker (1997)

English If I was more of a Bratislava fan, I could enjoy this film a lot more. As it is, it's just a silly Hollywood flick, embellished by the dysfunctional Clooney/Kidman duo. Clooney plays the classic style that made him famous, while Kidman only distinguishes her role with her alabaster skin and new dark brown haircut, but otherwise both are bored through the film, as is the audience.

Hurvínek na scéně (2010)

English I'm not entirely sure if this theatrical footage was suitable material for 3D cinema, but so be it. All those earlier encounters between Hurvínek and film look quite similar anyway, starting with Spejbl's film intoxication from 1931. This is a Christmas mini that doesn't make sense to watch in the summer, but the last week of the year might be enjoyable. But I'm happy that the tradition continues and now Hurvínek will be in movie theaters without leashes for the first time.

The Animated Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1998)

English What can I add about the animated adventures of Tom Sawyer? Perhaps just that it's good for kids to start here before they read an actual book in a year or two. This is a classic cheap 1990s cartoon, and my primary appreciation of it is the Kirsten Dunst dubbing (yes, I like her that I know all her dubbing roles).
