One hundred years before the notorious O.J. Simpson trial America fell under the spell of a murder tragedy for the first time. At the end of the nineteenth century Lizzie Borden was accused of killing her mother and father with an axe. Because her guilt could not convincingly be established, she was acquitted. Since then publications about this horrible crime have appeared almost every year. Lizzie Borden became the central figure of a true cult. Her 'fame' is even sung about in a nursery rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks. When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41". Immy Humes describes her documentary as a 'whacky talkie'. She leads the audience into an absurd world of Lizzie Borden dolls and a Lizzie Borden rock band who even perform an axe act.
