Plots(1)

The General Netherlands Building Workers Union asked Ivens to make a film about the youth camp that the union organised annually for its junior members. Taking Joop Huisken and Mark Kolthoff along with him, the filmmaker travelled to the camp in the Veluwe region of the country and made Van jeugd, strijd en arbeid (Of Youth, Struggle and Labour). The three shot footage of the various activities: seeking shelter from the rain, washing up in the morning, going for a walk, preparing a meal. Apart from the composition in a couple of shots that clearly show avant-garde influences, the film is generally more a form of reportage. Note: only the first reel of this film has survived.
