Set against the background of early 19th century France, this is the story of Jean Valjean (Gerard Depardieu), an ex-convict who becomes mayor, but is haunted by his past. He meets a beautiful but desperately ill woman named Fantine (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and cares for her daughter Cosette (Virginie Ledoyen) after her death.
