In several of his films Ingmar Bergman has portrayed artists of many different kinds. Never before, perhaps, has he discussed the problems of being an artist in such an open and naked manner as in After the Rehearsal, although it never develops into a gloomy lecture on the conditions of art. Why not? Because each of its roles is so brilliantly portrayed and because it gives the impression of being done with the supreme inner balance so characteristic of Bergman's most recent work.
