Dennis Hopper (Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now, Blue Velvet) stars as Dan Morgan, the infamous real-life 1800’s outlaw, an Irish immigrant working as a gold digger in the treacherous Australian brush. When his comrades reject him, Morgan resorts to stealing horses, and is caught and sentenced to jail. After years of abuse and brutality, Morgan is released, and falls back into his outlaw ways. I was quite pleasantly surprised at how cruel this film is. The gore here is surprising from the very first moment and especially good. The whole film then leads to the notion that it's actually about self-destruction, which is intriguingly utilized within the Australian setting, complete with all its elements. The character played by Hopper deserves to be parodied, but at the same time, he's tragically fascinating.
