Adapted from Deborah Harkness' best-selling trilogy of novels, A Discovery of Witches is a bold and romantic thriller that uncovers a secret underworld of extraordinary beings hiding in plain sight for fear of persecution by humans – they are vampires, witches and daemons. Brilliant historian Diana Bishop is a witch denying her own heritage. But when she unexpectedly calls up an ancient, bewitched manuscript from Oxford's Bodleian library, one that was thought by the creatures to be lost and could answer the mysteries of their existence, she finds herself thrown into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of the enigmatic geneticist and vampire Matthew Clairmont. Matthew is driven to solve the looming threat of the creatures' decline and extinction, but their unlikely alliance to find the book before it falls into the wrong hands – and their deepening relationship – threatens to violate age-old taboos and shake the fragile peace that exists between the species. A Discovery of Witches (2018)

English At first, I was hoping for a decent fantasy series (perhaps even with horror elements), but it soon became clear that the creators had decided to nip my hopes in the bud. The romantic storyline quickly took over and the series became a cross between The Vampire Diaries and The Twilight Saga, so I'm proud of myself for making it to the end of the first season. 3*- ()

Episode 1 (2018) (S01E01)

English I gave the first episode a cautious three stars. The concept of gifted (or cursed) beings living among humans could be really intriguing, but I’m not sure if it’s not going to spiral into a weird romance. There were a lot of unnecessarily long eye-gazing, which made me nervous. Please, just don’t turn this into another Twilight saga, I’m begging you... ()

Episode 2 (2018) (S01E02)

English Still hanging in there with three stars, but my concerns are growing. I have a bad feeling that the inevitable romantic subplot is going to gradually bury all the mystery and fun. On the bright side, it’s refreshing to see that the main roles aren’t played by some pretentious teens. Dr. Bishop is quite captivating, and so far, Professor Clairmont isn’t getting on my nerves either. ()

Episode 3 (2018) (S01E03)

English The highlights of this episode were definitely that Dr. Bishop remains easy on the eyes and that the plot actually made some progress. On the downside, the romantic subplot is taking up way too much screen time. I also found it annoying that we’ve seen several demons by now, but it’s still not clear why they’re called demons since they don’t seem to act any differently from regular people. Couldn’t they just be called humans? ()

Episode 4 (2018) (S01E04)

English For the first time, I was genuinely satisfied with the episode. But then the creators couldn’t resist shoehorning in gender and racial issues among the vampires, demons, and witches, in line with current trends. It felt so forced and unnecessary, it just ruined the experience for me. ()

Episode 5 (2018) (S01E05)

English Well, here we are. Dr. Bishop is lucky her heart rate doesn’t spike during intimate moments, or the professor surely wouldn’t be able to control himself, and the series would have to end early. It’s sad because the show had decent potential, but now it’s likely to become just another easily forgettable series. And that awful music during the love scenes... why? ()

Episode 6 (2018) (S01E06)

English The supposedly terrifying Satu turned out to be a pretty incompetent torturer. I'm no witch, but I know a few effective ways to cause pain, and aside from the back-burning, her methods were pretty mild. The whole episode felt a bit weak, and the only part I really enjoyed was the segment with Meridian. ()

Episode 7 (2018) (S01E07)

English This episode, which shed light on past events, wasn’t as bad as the previous one, but I feel like the creators keep ending the episodes in very similar ways. I’m also bothered by the writer's inconsistencies. At one moment, the vampire is troubled by his agitated blood, but in the next, he’s completely fine. Plus, despite his great instincts, he fails to detect another undead. They really need to sort out these logical flaws. ()

Episode 8 (2018) (S01E08)

English The season finale convinced me that I should probably skip the upcoming seasons. Instead of focusing on mysteries and intrigue, the plot centered once again on the relationship between the main characters. The opening scene really put me off, and the cliffhanger ending didn’t do much to entice me to watch more. ()
