Plots(1)

It's Hollywood, 1958. Small town beauty queen and devout Baptist virgin Marla Mabrey (Collins), under contract to the infamous Howard Hughes (Beatty), arrives in Los Angeles. At the airport, she meets her driver Frank Forbes (Ehrenreich), who is engaged to be married to his 7th grade sweetheart and is a deeply religious Methodist. Their instant attraction not only puts their religious convictions to the test, but also defies Hughes' #1 rule: no employee is allowed to have any relationship whatsoever with a contract actress. Hughes' behavior intersects with Marla and Frank in very separate and unexpected ways, and as they are drawn deeper into his bizarre world, their values are challenged and their lives are changed. English Warren Beatty returned to the acting elite and enlisted not only his wife Annette Bening but also other acting stars, starlets, and legends. Unfortunately, even with such elite talent and a character like Howard Hughes, a film can turn out to be dull and predictable, likely not entertaining you for most of its duration. I didn't enjoy it. English Warren Beatty has reportedly been flirting with the idea of making a film about Howard Hughes for decades. The problem is that it is not very noticeable in the result. His film Rules Don't Apply doesn't reveal much about the eccentric billionaire. So there's nothing left but to focus on the romantic storyline in the form of the budding relationship between the aspiring actress and her driver, whose lives are significantly influenced by Howard Hughes. I more or less understand all that; it's just that it could have been wrapped up without a bunch of unnecessary baggage in a significantly shorter time. (55%) ()
