Set in the mecca of the rich and famous, Ray Donovan does the dirty work for L.A.'s top power players. The series stars Liev Schreiber as the go-to guy who makes the problems of the city's celebrities, superstar athletes, and business moguls disappear. This powerful drama unfolds when his father, Mickey Donovan, is unexpectedly released from prison, setting off a chain of events that shakes the Donovan family to its core. Ray works with two associates – his #1, Avi, an imposing Israeli, and Lena, a laconic, hardboiled lesbian who serves as his #2. Most of Ray's work is for the most powerful law firm in town led by his confidante and mentor Ezra Goodman, and his partner, Lee Drexler. The only problems he can't fix are those involving his own family. Ray's brother Bunchy was abused by a priest and now can't stay sober; his brother Terry was left in the boxing ring too long and developed Parkinson's; and the ghost of their little sister -- who committed suicide when she was a teenager -- haunts them all. Additionally, his wife Abby is still adjusting to their suburban life while raising their two children, Bridget and Conor. To Ray, all of their problems can be traced back to one person: their father Mickey, a gangster with the Irish mob who never protected his family. But everything is turned upside down when Mickey, after twenty years in a cage, makes his way to Los Angeles and is hungry for revenge. He wants money, a new life, and his place at the head of his family. (official distributor synopsis)

Reviews of this series by the user Necrotongue (78)

Horses (2017) (S05E08)

English Oh no, as soon as I praise something, I immediately fall on my face. I acknowledge and understand that the topic of the eighth episode may deeply affect someone, and I apologize in advance to these people for what will follow, but for me, the episode was pure agony. I'm not exactly living an amazing life (actually, I'm just surviving), so I want to have fun with movies and TV shows and not watch a suicide dragged out for fifty minutes. It was boredom and a lot of emotional manipulation for me. ()

Mister Lucky (2017) (S05E09)

English After the previous tragedy, the series set off in the right direction with its ninth episode, although it was evident that the creators had decided that they simply cannot do without cancer. The pace of the story was definitely much faster and the plot was more interesting, so I wasn't bored, it just felt strange that not a word was said about Maria. 3*+ ()

Bob the Builder (2017) (S05E10)

English The events in the tenth episode were not completely perfect, but I was so happy that finally, it came to matters that I enjoy, that I added that fourth part. Yeah, yeah, it's immediately something else when I don't have to force myself to speed up time on the clock. ()

Michael (2017) (S05E11)

English And just when I thought the situation was improving, another unpleasant slowdown occurred. Maybe I would have approached the episode more forgivingly if Bridget had been even a little sympathetic to me, but under these circumstances, it was again a bit boring and the new twist between Brandon and Theresa didn't improve the situation. ()

Time Takes a Cigarette (2017) (S05E12)

English Well, hooray, at least I could praise the final episode of the fifth season. Something was happening all the time, I wasn't threatened by any boredom, so I decided to pretend that I didn't actually notice that blatant reference to MeToo. For me, it was the best episode of this season. ()

Season 6 (2018) (S06)

English What a psycho season. The slow-paced and lackluster story in the first half made me think I was wasting my time but the second half brought a significant improvement and the last four episodes only confirmed it. Although this season was far from perfect, it definitely beat the previous oncological nightmare. ()

Staten Island, Part One (2018) (S06E01)

English In the first episode of the sixth season, there was one big change - the storyline moved to New York. That's the only observation I'm certain of, I don't dare to classify the other developments after the first episode with certainty, for now, I remain at three stars and wait to see how the creators will impress me. ()

Staten Island, Part Two (2018) (S06E02)

English Now I am sure, three stars were also a good choice for the previous episode. The pace of the story is not completely slow, but I wouldn't say that it's gripping either. Ray's solution to the complicated situation pleased me, but I was also quite annoyed that the plot from the first season (Brandon- Mickey) is returning again. ()

He Be Tight. He Be Mean. (2018) (S06E03)

English The third episode felt like a really bad joke to me. I actually only enjoyed the part where Ray was supposed to influence a television debate, but the rest... An escaped prisoner is driving from Los Angeles to New York, no one is looking for him, no road checks, after all, he only had to kill the local FBI director, right? I had a similar feeling with Jay's kidnapping, when it gets dark, fans of movie stars have it easy, the area is completely unguarded... Damn it, that was a load of nonsense. ()

Pudge (2018) (S06E04)

English There is a significant improvement compared to the previous part, and I had been thinking for a while that I could even add a fourth star after some time, but then Terry jumped into the ring. Since the first season, the creators have been convincing me that the only retarded Donovan is Brandon, and now this. Well, let's see how it will turn out... ()

Ellis Island (2018) (S06E05)

English Despite the character Bridget, who I find quite annoying even though she has a good mood, and despite Ray's strange trip, I added the fourth star this time, even though it is not particularly strong. The plot entertained me this time though, especially Ray's work on the political assignment was worth it, so I wasn't bored. 4* ()

A Girl Named Maria (2018) (S06E06)

English The sixth episode definitely had potential and I would rate it with a higher number of stars because this time I felt that the creators managed to work much better with the emotions of the individual characters. However, then the duo Mickey/Brandon got into action and I couldn't believe it. The bus robbery, followed by zero police response, greatly disappointed me, but when the same situation repeated during the bank robbery, it directly angered me. ()

The 1-3-2 (2018) (S06E07)

English I quite enjoyed the seventh episode, I liked how the situation around Ray's political task escalated. I'm really glad that Ray hasn't gotten lost in all his twists and turns so far, because the others can't keep up with him. Mickey spoiled the experience for me a bit again this time, the retirement escape from the police was over the line. ()

Who Once Was Dead (2018) (S06E08)

English I must admit that the second half of the sixth season is developing much better than the first. Even the eighth episode was not bad at all, although I could easily skip Bridget's heart-wrenching scene, but that is mainly because I don't really relate to that character. ()

Dream On (2018) (S06E09)

English No, not that the ninth episode was flawless, I just decided to ignore the problematic moments this time because I enjoyed the whole thing very much, and that happened to me for the first time in the last two seasons of this series. It had momentum, I wasn't bored for a moment, I didn't even mind Ray's meeting with Bridget face to face, and that's saying something. ()

Baby (2018) (S06E10)

English No, I don't know if it is wise for the creators of the series to save quality episodes until the last third, they could also risk turning viewers away with the previous boredom and only we with great endurance will remain for them. Just like in the case of the previous episode, I was very satisfied and enjoyed myself now as well. ()

Never Gonna Give You Up (2019) (S06E11)

English This mix of horror and black humor worked perfectly for me, and it would be even better if the creators somewhat limited Sandy, her dialogue really annoys me. I think Jake as a comedic character is more than enough for me. Solid action and tension, and a very decent atmosphere, I had to be satisfied with that. ()

The Dead (2019) (S06E12)

English The ending of the final episode of the sixth season was somewhat weaker, but what got me was the contrast between the brutally bloody beginning, which combined a slaughter with a cemetery, and the tender winter romance at the end. Although I didn't rate it below four stars, I didn't quite understand why the creators suddenly denied everything they had been pushing about Bridget's character since the first season, it seemed like the onset of real schizophrenia.
