Hands of Stone follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words 'no mas' ('no more'). An average boxing drama that has the value and qualities of the most average pint of beer draft at your favorite pub. ()
It's a boxing movie, so I'll be kind, but still, it's more on the average side than anything else. Roberto Durán is certainly an intriguing character, but in this portrayal, he simply comes off as a naughty child who straightened up, or rather, as someone who had their issues and resolved them. Robert De Niro is fine, but otherwise, nobody really excels. ()
