Doctor Kovács István summarizes the lesson of his career in front of the curtain. The story develops. Doctor Kovács, son of a peasant family man from Northern Hungary, becomes an honourable professor of history at the university. He would marry Tatár Ada, daughter of the parvenu lawyer, whose family is ashamed of his. So Kovács decides for his old sweetheart, Balog Ágnes. The honourable lady, who once was a peasant girl and Kovács's lectures about Hungarian origins divide the students and acquaintances. But the minister's official opinion supports Doctor Kovács.
