1945. Mrs. Banga and her two small children return to Budapest after the siege. What used to be their flat is now a place in rumbles. Her husband, who, thanks to rumours spread by the leader of the personnel department, is thought to have been an arrow-cross man, is now a POW. Ilona takes a job in a factory with the help of their former servant. Marika, her sister-in-law, is seen developing loose habits. Banga returns from his captivity in Russia, he clears himself, but cannot find his place in the changed world. His former friends have no difficulty in talking him into trying to defect to the West, where he could also take his new invention. Ilona tips off the police, thus preventing Kálmán from defecting. Soon they realise the common objective in their lives: work. (official distributor synopsis)
