The Handy Kaufmans, New Jersey's foremost underachieving rock band, are about to embark on one final tour. Either they make it big this time or they resign themselves to a life of 9-to-5 mediocrity. Lee, their drummer, is a control freak and being pushed out by his retiring parents. Donnie, lead singer and compulsive lothario, and Big Frank, the incompetent but gold-hearted manager, are always causing mischief. Mike, the chief song-writer, tries to emulate the tortured-artist lifestyle of the icons he idolizes. When their bassist, Jim, electrocutes himself, the band is joined by last-minute replacement Trixie, a wild beauty and bassist who sparks up Lee's dormant romantic instincts.
