Nadja, a Bulgarian girl, is a student at the Academy of Music in Budapest. She has a job in a cafe by the Danube, where she plays the piano in the evenings to earn some money to buy paint for Sándor, her love, who is a Fine Arts student. Sándor is preparing a surprise for Nadja her portrait, which he works on in secret. He asks Ljuba, the girl's friend, to sit for him in Bulgarian national costume. Nadja's job as a pianist is no longer a secret at the Aca-demy. As students mustn't have a job, she turns up at the flat of professor Bakos, her favourite teacher, a bachelor in his fifties, who has been in love with his student for a long time, to ask his help. The professor misinterprets the situation and, kissing the girl, proposes to her. Nadja rushes off to Sándor's, only to find him with Ljuba, this time it is her turn to misinterpret the situation. She returns to Bulgaria. Misunderstandings are explained on the beach and the young couple make it up.
