The young boy learns from a greedy class-mate of his - in return for 10 creamy cakes, - that his father has been hanged. This is when mother starts talking about father who has been dead for over 10 years. She tells him that the allowance they receive is the manifestation of the bad conscious of the government, and that is why they spend that money on a dog-farm. The countess brings up the boy to be a politician, while the mother would like to protect him from every wind.
